My robotics team at school made a Virtual reality movie. It is about caring for class pets the right way. We need all the help we can get or make this video go VIRAL. Share it with EVERYONE you know and post on your social media. You can find it on YouTube. You can use google cardboard or just watch it on your phone. You can even watch it on your computer. Make sure to “smash the like button” and tell other people to do the same so we can share our message with as many people as possible. Theatre Tag

  1. When did you start theatre? I started theatre when I was 8 years old in the 3rd grade.
  2. When did you know you wanted to do theatre? I knew I wanted to do theatre for a while before I actually started. I had seen a handful of shows with my parents and had always liked it. But, the turning point for me was  when I saw Riverdale Children’s Theatre’s (the company I now do shows with) production of Peter Pan. I saw a friend in the show so I realized it was something I could do. On the back of the playbill there were audition dates for Into the Woods…so I did it.
  3. How many shows have you been in? Soon-to-be 9. Into the woods, Beauty and the Beast, Oliver, Sleeping Beauty, Madagascar, The Little Mermaid,
  4. What was your favorite role your ever played? Shenzi the hyena in the Lion King. Technically I haven’t played this role yet…but I will in two weeks(Find out more about my show that’s opening in two weeks here). It is the funnest role I have played so far because the character is so crazy and big it is really fun to play. It was really challenging at first to get into character but in the end it was fun to come up with a mean, crazy, funny character. Also I enjoy being a part of a group of people. For example, there are three main hyenas and we are always together.
  5. What is your biggest theatre pet peeve? Theater  Theatre. And also divas. Just divas.
  6. What is your dream role? I just saw Kinky Boots so my current dream role is Lauren from Kinky Boots. The character is so awkward and drop-dead funny.
  7. What is your favorite show? What  kind of question of this?????????????????????????
  8. What has been your most awkward stage moment? I’ve never really made an onstage mistake but once, while doing Oliver, I was supposed to look like a boy so I had a hat on my head covering my hair. My friend pulled it off and the audience could see all my hair. VERY embarrassing!
  9. What has been your most challenging role to play? The most challenging role I’ve played is the role I’m currently playing: Shenzi in the Lion King. At the beginning of rehearsals it was really hard for me to find a character. But now it is a really fun role and that is the reason it is my favorite role as well as the most challenging.
  10. What would you be doing if theatre didn’t exist? I have absolutely NO idea.
  11. Plays or musicals? I love both but musicals are more fun to be a part of.
  12. What was the first Broadway musical you saw? Newsies.
  13. What was the first Broadway play you saw? The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime
  14. Which musicals are you dying to see? The Book of Mormon, Wicked, Lion King, Bronx Tale, and of course, Hamilton. There are many more. Basically any musical on Broadway.

KINKY BOOTS!!!

Today my dad and I went to Times Square to get tickets from TKTS to see a show. We got up early, and got there at 9am. We waited on line for an hour and then got tickets to…KINKY BOOTS! We had no idea what we wanted to see when we went down there and after talking with other ‘theatergoers’, we chose Kinky Boots. We were also thinking about Dear Evan Hansen, Front Page, A Bronx Tale, Waitress, and others.kinky_boots_musical_poster

Some background: Kinky Boots is a musical set in England about a man named Charlie who was passed down his fathers shoe making factory. Unfortunately, the business is failing and he has to find a way to save it. Along the way he meets a drag queen named Lola who helps him rebuild the factory in a newer, better, more modern way. You’ll have to see the show to find out the rest.

My thoughts: First off, the show is amazing in general. But one thing that made it so great was the fact that the acting was so great. The show has its share of energetic celebratory numbers as well as emotional and heart-breaking ones. The cast did an excellent job of explaining the story through these songs. I think the shows message is that it is OK to be who YOU are, and nobody else. The musical shows this message by telling the story of the drag queen, Lola, who gets insulted and hurt by people at the factory but then teaches them how to accept people for who they are.

I totally recommend it for anyone and everyone. It is a show that really leaves you with a strong message and something you will always remember.

What was 2016!

2016 was pretty intense, in good ways and bad. Trump got elected president, Prince died, Zika virus, HAMILTON, fake news, where will it end!

Here is a song that pretty much sums 2016 up for you:

I’m just glad it is over so we can welcome more chaos in 2017! yippee…

Happy New Year!!!

Election!

I was just at a friends to watch the election and it is CRAZY! I’m kinda really freaking out. At the beginning of the day I was really confident that Hillary was going to win but now I’m not to sure. We were all talking about what if  Trump is president and it was really scaring me. All they were saying was “Its to close/early to call” like they have nothing better to do.

Half of me wants to go to sleep and wait until the morning to find out and the other half wants to stay up a little bit longer to find out. But, everything is so close it is even scarier.

The perfect election song at the moment:

That’s all for now.

Devin

P.S. My mom (Prof. Margaret Groarke) is on News 12 the Bronx right now with a colleague talking about the election.

GodComplx

A couple of weeks ago I went with my Girls Who Code group to Google for the premiere of a new youtube series called GodComplx. It is about a woman who is “making it” as a coder and her journey and obstacles along the way. We saw the first three episodes and the rest came out yesterday, November 1st. You should check it out and tell your friends to check it out because it is REALLY good. The more views they get the more they can do in the future so please support them and check out their channel where you can watch the full season.

Hello! Today was my first day back at school! UGH! There’s really not that much to say about that so yea. I had a GREAT summer! I went to sleep away camp for a month, as I have in past years, I went to Massachusetts with my family for a week, I hung out at my friends house on Cape Cod for a week, and then I went to Rhythm and Roots on Labor Day Weekend. In between all that fun stuff, I hung out in the Bronx with my friend, Shoshana.

I will be going in to seventh grade at the same school I’ve been at since Kindergarten but it has changed a lot since then. This year I will be taking Spanish so that is very exciting. I have three new teachers this year and one teacher that has taught at the school before. I don’t really know what else to say about the school year because we haven’t done much yet but I’ll let you know if anything exciting happens.
